Pongal is a major festival celebrated in South India. The real meaning of Pongal is to boil. By the way, its second meaning is also the New Year. The name of the prasad that is boiled and offered to the sun by boiling jaggery and rice is Pongal.

There are four Pongals of this festival that lasts for four days. Dedicated entirely to nature, this festival is being celebrated since ancient times after harvesting crops. The practice of sisters praying for long life for brothers like Bhaiya Dooj is similar to the worship of Chhath, Bhaiya Dooj and Govardhan puja. The four types of Pongal are as follows - Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kanya Pongal respectively.

On the first day, Lord Indra is worshiped in Bhogi Pongal. Indradev is also known as Bhogi. People worship and worship Indradev on the first day of Pongal for rain and good harvest. The second puja of Pongal is in the form of Surya Puja. In this, in new utensils, new rice, moong dal and jaggery are put and worshiped on banana leaves with sugarcane, ginger, etc. This offering offered to the sun is made in sunlight.

The third day is celebrated as Mattu Pongal. Mattoo is actually worshiped on this day, the bull of Nandi i.e. Shiva. It is said that nandi, one of the main ganas of Shiva, once made a mistake, for that mistake, Bholenath asked him to go to earth as a bull and help humans. In his memory, this festival of Pongal is still celebrated today. The fourth Pongal is Kanya Pongal which is celebrated with great pomp in a Kali temple here.

Only women participate in it. In ancient times, this festival was celebrated as The Dravina Shasya Festival. The inscription found in the temple of Tiruvallur shows that the Kilutanga king used to donate land and temple to the poor on the occasion of Pongal. On this occasion, there was a dance ceremony and the practice of fighting a courageous battle with the bull. At that time, the most powerful was chosen by the girls on this day.
